Services
& Programs for Teenage Parents
Healy Murphy
Center provides compassionate service to youth-in-crisis by
focusing on individualized education in a non-traditional
setting, early childhood development, and essential support
services. Healy Murphy is for:
- Any high
school aged youth who, for any reason, is not successful
in a traditional school environment.
- Any teenager
who needs additional services such as childcare, parenting
shills training, and/or life shills training.
- Any high
school student who needs help in basic courses to complete
high school or a G.E.D.
Located
at the corner of Highway 281 and Nolan Street, Margaret Mary
Healy Murphy built St. Peter Claver Academy as a boarding
school for African-American youth. To staff the school with
dedicated teachers, she established the Sisters of the Holy
Spirit and Mary Immaculate and recruited young women into
the order.
The Sisters
reorganized the program in 1970, and directed their services
to pregnant teenagers, high school dropouts, and other students
having difficulties in the regular school environment. The
newly named Healy Murphy Center was the first accredited alternative
high school in Texas.
Any student
can complete his or her high school education and graduate
from Healy Murphy, catch up on high school credits and then
return to his or her previous high school, or work toward
a G.E.D.
