On June 24, 2011 the new General Council of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate was installed during ceremonies at the Motherhouse. Following a service in our chapel, a tree was planted to mark the occasion, then a reception followed.
The new council includes General Superior Sister Miriam Mitchell and a team of Councilors: Sisters Marian Murray, Gabriella Lohan, Bernie Barrett, and Marguerite Connors.
Sister Mary Garrehy died peacefully at Holy Spirit Convent, 300 Yucca Street, San Antonio, on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. Sister Mary was born in County Clare, Ireland, on April 28, 1921.
She joined the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate on October 3, 1938. Sister Mary earned an M.A. degree in Education from Saint Mary's University in San Antonio. She taught in various Elementary and Secondary schools of the Congregation in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas and was an adjunct Professor of English and Spanish for Saint Mary's University. After retiring from teaching, Sister Mary continued to remain active in many volunteer ministries, especially her music and a variety of crafts, until very recently.
Sister Mary had three brothers and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Denis, John and Patrick Garrehy. She is survived by two sisters who live in England, Ann Garrehy Sims and Joan Garrehy Crick, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Sister Mary's body was brought to Holy Spirit Convent, 300 Yucca Street, at 4:30 on Thursday, June 16, 2011. There was a Rosary and a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at Holy Spirit Convent at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 17, followed by interment in the Sisters’ cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ministries of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate.
